South Jersey Railroad Company was founded in N.J., Aug. 22, 1893, by merger of Richland and Petersburg Railroad Company, Winslow and Richland Railroad Company, and Petersburg and Sea Isle Railroad Company; absorbed Cape May Railroad Company, June 25, 1894; sold at foreclosure and reorganized as Seacoast Railroad Company, May 16, 1898.
The original line ran from Winslow Junction to Cape May and from Tuckahoe to Sea Isle City, a distance of39 miles. Running mostly trolleys along its route, it serviced local traffic. The company headquarters was in Philadelphia PA.
