Product Description

Utica City Rail Road Company stock certificate 1862 (New York)

Great early trolley piece. Nice vignette of an early streetcar scene on city streets.  Unissued and not cancelled. Dated 18__, circa 1862 from company records.

The Utica City Rail Road Company was organized 1862.  Permission was granted to lay rails in the streets in late 1862 and horse cars were run to New Hartford in 1863, Whitesboro in 1866. The corporate name of the company was changed Utica and Waterville Railroad Company in 1864 and again changed to Utica, Clinton, and Binghamton Railroad Company in 1867.

The steam road of this company, from Utica to Smith's Valley, was leased in 1872 to the New York and Oswego Midland Railway.  This lease was assumed by the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company when the NY & Oswego Midland failed. The New York, Ontario, and Western then operated the lines. In 1886, the surface streets and horse cars owned by the company were leased to the Utica Belt Line Railroad.
