Allegheny Airlines was a major U.S. regional airline, operating from Pittsburgh from the 1950s to 1979, known as the predecessor to USAir, which then became US Airways and merged into American Airlines, leaving behind a significant legacy in American aviation history through its growth and early use of commuter networks.
Origins:
Started as All American Aviation in 1939, focused on airmail, then transitioned to passenger service as All American Airways in 1949.
Renaming:
Became Allegheny Airlines in 1953, establishing its hub in Pittsburgh and expanding routes across the Eastern U.S.
Growth & Mergers:
Merged with Lake Central Airlines (1968) and Mohawk Airlines (1972), becoming the largest airline in the Northeast by 1972.
The "Allegheny Commuter":
Pioneered the use of affiliated regional carriers for "last-mile" service, a model later adopted industry-wide.
Transformation to USAir:
In 1979, under deregulation, Allegheny rebranded as USAir (later US Airways), signaling its move to national status.
Final Chapter:
US Airways eventually merged with American Airlines in 2015, integrating Allegheny's history into American's heritage fleet.
