The American Sumatra Tobacco Company was a major producer of cigar wrapper tobacco, famous for its vast "Amsterdam" plantation in Georgia, peaking in the 1920s but declining due to shifting cigarette markets and disease, leading to receivership in 1931, eventual acquisition by Imperial Tobacco, and cessation of operations by 1965, with its lands sold off.
Formation:
Formed in 1907 from a merger of seven large growers in the tobacco region of Georgia and Florida.
Key Asset:
Owned the 14,000-acre Amsterdam plantation, once the world's largest single-owner tobacco plantation. The company specialized in cultivating shade-grown tobacco leaf, a product renowned for its high-quality cigar wrappers.
Peak:
Became dominant in the cigar wrapper market, producing millions of pounds of leaf annually in the 1910s and 1920s, with operations in Florida (Quincy) and Connecticut (South Windsor).
Imperial Tobacco:
Acquired by Imperial Tobacco Company in 1955, which stopped tobacco growing by 1965.
Land Sale:
The land, including the Amsterdam property, was sold to Coastal Lumber Company in 1967.
