Product Description
Batchelder Snyder Dorr & Doe stock certificate c1930 (Massachusetts)
Boston meatpacker. Great vignette of the company's headquarters and retail shop. Building and storefront boast "Batchelder and Snyder" and not using the additional names of the merged companies. Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1930. Approximately 12 x 8 inches.
The company was originally founded in 1885 as Francis Batchelder & Co and was incorporated under the laws of South Dakota. In 1906, the company was reorganized as a Maine entity, the Batchelder & Snyder Company, and headquartered in Portland. On December 23, 1919, the company was incorporated as a Massachusetts company with a Boston establishment.
The Batchelder and Snyder Company was also a major producer of various meat products, including sausage manufacturing, with plants all over Boston. They sold their products to over 5,000 customers along the Atlantic seaboard and throughout New York State and New England. They were in business for over 43 years until they merged with Arthur E. Dorr Company and William A. Doe Company, which were both prominent in food distribution, to grow the business even further. With this merger, Batchelder and Snyder Co. eventually moved to a seven-story location on Blackstone, North, and North Center Streets in 1913. This location consisted of smokehouses, freezer rooms, and large storage spaces that allowed for continued growth.
In 1930, the formation of the Batchelder, Snyder, Dorr & Doe Company, a consolidation of three wholesale packing and food distributing companies of Boston, was announced. In 1930, the Batchelder & Snyder Company merged with the Arthur E. Dorr Company and the William A. Doe Company to become the Batchelder, Snyder, Dorr & Doe Company.
The company was one of the many Boston meat packers - serving primarily hotels and restaurants. However, they did also direct to consumers via their storefront from their main location.
The company eventually was controlled by General Foods by 1934.
