Brockport and Shawmut Railroad stock certificate c1886 (Pennsylvania) 

NW PA railroad. Nice vignette of steam train in the countryside, telegraph pole and another train in the background. Unissued and not cancelled.  Circa 1886. Dated 18__ on the cert.  Approximately 10.5 x 7.5 inches.

The Brockport and Shawmut was incorporated 1886, under the general laws of Pennsylvania, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from Brockport to Shawmut, Pa (Northwest part of the state - North of Punxsutawney). The railroad was a single-track branch line, located entirely within the State of Pennsylvania with trackage of 2.4 miles, mostly for hauling coal from the local mines.

Brockport and Shawmut was controlled by the Erie through ownership of the entire outstanding capital stock. The property of the Brockport and Shawmut was operated by The New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad Company and its receivers from the date it was completed, about 1890, until December 1, 1895. From the latter date to December 31, 1917, it was operated by the Erie. The common-carrier property of the company was taken over for operation by the United States Railroad Administration on January 1, 1918, as part of the system of the Erie RR.
