Product Description

Bush Terminal Company stock certificate 1927 (New York)

Brooklyn company! Nice vignette of a seated classical female figure holding a winged wheel with railroad, city, and ship terminal scenes in the background. Issued and cancelled. Dated 1927. Measures approximately 11.5 x 8.5 inches.

The Bush Terminal Company, founded by Irving T. Bush in 1902, was a pioneering, self-contained industrial complex in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Originally, it was named the Bush Company starting with a banana-importing business. Ships loaded down with bananas came directly to his piers; he stored them briefly in his warehouses, then shipped them out on his rail carriers. He made money. He did it again with coffee and cotton, and success continued.

His initial warehouses — all brick stores, like those further up the bay at Red Hook and Atlantic Basin — were built between 1892 and 1910. He constructed his railroad yards between 1896 and 1915, and added factory buildings between 1895 and 1925.

It integrated warehousing, manufacturing, and intermodal transport (rail, barge, ship) with numerous warehouses, piers, and railroad tracks. Bush Terminal became a major economic hub employing thousands before facing bankruptcy in 1972 and eventually evolving into today's Industry City.

Innovation:
It was America's first fully integrated manufacturing and warehousing facility, a model for modern logistics, says MichaelMinn.net.

Scale:
At its peak, it covered 20 waterfront blocks, boasted seven piers, and over 20 miles of railroad tracks.

Founder:
Irving T. Bush envisioned a better way to handle cargo, combining different transport modes efficiently.

Decline & Transformation:
The company filed for bankruptcy in 1972, leading to its takeover by NYC, setting the stage for its rebirth as Industry City.
