Careercom, formerly based in Philadelphia, sold Phillips Business College in early 1987. Based in Middletown, Careercom was known as Educom when it was based in Philadelphia. It specialized in retraining industrial workers for new jobs in the service sector, and grew rapidly. The company had 76 schools in 1988, compared with 17 in 1984. Careercom reported revenues of $84.2 million for the fiscal year 988. That represented an 87 percent increase from the previous fiscal year.
The company paid a fine for filling out student applications for federal grants in 1988 at its Phillips Business College (Virginia Business College, Inc.) in Lynchburg, VA.
