The Carolina Savings Bank of Charleston, SC, was chartered in 1874, with George W. Williams as its founder and president. Williams was a Charleston merchant, banker, and railroad executive who also founded the grocery firm of George W. Williams & Co. in Charleston in 1852.
Williams began his career as a merchant in Augusta, Ga. In 1852 he established the wholesale grocery firm of George W. Williams & Co. in Charleston, S.C. He was founder and president of the Carolina Savings Bank of Charleston (chartered 1874) and a director of the South Carolina Railroad and the Charleston and Savannah Railroad (later called the Savannah and Charleston Railroad). His son George W. Williams (1860-1923) was a Charleston businessman and banker.
