Product Description
Chicago and Erie Railroad stock certificate circa 1890 (New York)
Interesting vignette of a period steam train towing cargo and passenger cars around a curved track. Unissued and cancelled (hole in president signature block). Circa 1890 from company records. Approximately 12 x 9 inches.
Incorporated 1890 in New York, the Chicago and Erie Railroad was a railway line that operated from 1890 to 1941, connecting Chicago, Illinois, and Columbus, Ohio, through Indiana. It was formed after the bankruptcy of its predecessor, the Chicago and Atlantic Railway (estab. 1871).
C&E in joint ownership with 4 other companies owned the Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad (estab. 1879). The Chicago and Western was the owner of the Dearborn Station in Chicago and the trackage leading to it. It was owned equally by five of the railroads using it to reach the terminal, and kept those companies from needing their own lines into the city.
The C&E was acquired by the Erie Railroad in 1895, though it retained its name until its 1941 consolidation. The railroad was a standard-gage, steam railroad with tracks in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and its main office was in Huntington, Indiana.
