Cafeterias! Great vignette of a classical female with a globe, fountain, and harp over the company's logo name. Issued and punch cancelled to the right. Dated 1950 on the cert. Approximately 12 x 8 inches.
The Childs Company was also known as Childs Restaurants, a pioneer of American dining chains that operated from 1889 to 1967. Known for innovations like white-tiled interiors and tray-line cafeterias, it reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s with over 100 locations, but eventually closed in 1967.
Founding:
Samuel and William Childs founded the company in New York City in 1889.
Innovations:
Childs is considered a forerunner to modern fast food, notable for introducing white-tile interiors, waitresses, and the tray-line cafeteria format to urban dining.
Peak:
By 1925, there were 107 locations, and the company reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s with around 125 locations.
Decline:
The company faced growing competition and changing consumer habits, and by the late 1950s, most locations were closed.
Closure:
The last Childs restaurants closed in 1967.
