The Chino Copper Company was a historic mining firm established 1909 in Maine to operate the Santa Rita mine in Santa Rita, New Mexico. It pioneered large-scale open-pit porphyry copper mining. Today, the site operates under Freeport-McMoRan as a massive open pit measuring 1.75 miles across.
Location:
15 miles east of Silver City, New Mexico, in the town of Santa Rita (now swallowed by the ever-expanding pit).
History:
The company was founded by engineer John M. Sully and Spencer Penrose. The site was a historical copper source used by Apaches, Spaniards, and Mexicans dating back to 1800.
Evolution:
The company was later acquired and operated by Kennecott Copper Corporation and Phelps Dodge before being absorbed into its current owner, Freeport-McMoRan.
Operations:
It uses a state-of-the-art Solvent Extraction-Electrowinning (SX-EW) plant to produce 99.99% pure copper cathode.
