Incorporated in 1891 in Ohio, the Cincinnati, Portsmouth and Virginia Railroad (CP&V) was a short-lived but historically significant railroad, operating from around 1891 to 1901, connecting Cincinnati to Portsmouth, Ohio, and ultimately Virginia, serving as a key coal-hauling route.
The Cincinnati and Eastern Railway was a railroad that completed its line from a junction with the Cincinnati, Lebanon, and Northern Railway north of Cincinnati east to Portsmouth, Ohio in 1884. It began as the Cincinnati, Batavia, and Williamsburg Railroad in January 1876, and was renamed in May of the same year. The line was sold at foreclosure in January 1887 to the Ohio and North Western Railroad (which had been chartered in 1886), and in March 1890 it was again foreclosed, passing to the Cincinnati, Portsmouth, and Virginia Railroad in June 1891. The line of this road extended from Idlewild, Ohio, to Sciotoville, Ohio, 108 miles
Acquired by the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W) in 1901 after years of an existing lease, integrating its line into the larger N&W system that continued to use the route for decades.
