Product Description

Cincinnati Sandusky and Cleveland Railroad $1000 bond 1888 (Ohio)

OH RR. Beautiful bond and vignette of a period steam train pulling freight cars. $1000 denomination. Vertical format. Green border. Issued and cancelled. Dated 1888 in the text. Light folds from storage. Rough right edge from coupon removal. Measuring approximately 10.5 x 15.5 inches.

The Cincinnati, Sandusky & Cleveland Railroad (CS&C) was a key Ohio line connecting Dayton to Sandusky, with a branch to Findlay, eventually becoming part of the massive New York Central System (the "Big Four" Railroad) before its routes were split between Norfolk Southern (NS) and CSX Transportation after Conrail. It operated through various name changes, starting from earlier bankrupt lines, and its tracks still form part of the modern rail network, primarily controlled by NS today.

The line of the Cincinnati, Sandusky and Cleveland extending from Dayton to Springfield, Ohio, about 24 miles, was operated by the Big Four from July 1, 1889, to October 30, 1890, under a lease dated November 28, 1870, which was acquired by the Big Four from the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis Railway Company on July 1, 1889. On October 30, 1890, the Cincinnati, Sandusky, and Cleveland leased its entire property to the Big Four for a term of 99 years from the expiration of the lease dated November 28, 1870.

Formation:
Incorporated in 1866, acquiring assets from earlier bankrupt companies like the Sandusky, Dayton, & Cincinnati Railroad.

Route:
Main line from Dayton north to Sandusky (about 154 miles) with a branch to Findlay.

Operators:
Leased and operated by the Big Four, which was itself controlled by the New York Central.

Legacy:
Became part of Conrail, and its remaining trackage is now largely under Norfolk Southern ownership.
