The Commercial National Bank of Pennsylvania of Philadelphia charter number 556 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in Philadelphia County was granted a charter in 1864. The bank provided business loans for merchant shipping and, eventually, Philadelphia businesses of all types.
Greater Philadelphia’s banking roots go deeper than those of any region in the country. Philadelphia was the home of the first commercial bank (1782), the first national bank (1791), the first savings bank (1816), and the first savings and loan association (1831). Until the mid-1980s, celebrated local institutions such as First Pennsylvania, Girard, and Provident dominated the region. By the late twentieth century, however, historic regulatory changes led to acquisitions by out-of-town giants and changed the face of the banking industry both locally and nationally.
The National Banking Acts of 1863 and 1864 marked an important moment in the development of the U.S. banking system. These laws established many federal banking regulations that would last until the founding of the Federal Reserve System. Published July 31, 2022.
Historical Presence:
The Commercial National Bank of Pennsylvania existed in Philadelphia, with records from the 1880s and 1890s showing its operations and involvement in federal court cases. Currency issuances in 1865 include $5 and $10 notes.
