Delhi and Hudson River Railroad Company stock certificate circa 1881 (New York)

Great antique railroad stock cert. Wonderful vignette of a period steam train at a train depot with passengers milling about.  Unissued and not cancelled. Dated 188_ but circa 1881 from incorporation records. Measures approximately 12 x 7 inches. Note the missing 'h' for Pittsburgh in the title and body of the certificate printing.

The Delhi and Hudson River Railroad Company was a railway company formed by the Delaware and Hudson Company to replace its successful D&H Canal System, which transported coal from Pennsylvania to the Hudson River. The railroad was initially created to build and operate railways over the Delaware and Hudson Canal system's route to carry anthracite coal. 

The village of Delhi is the county seat of Delaware County in New York. Located in the Catskill Mountains, this Delhi is far from the Hudson River. The "Delhi and Hudson River Railroad Co." was formed to connect the area toward the Hudson. 

This line was originally organized as the Delhi and Middletown Railroad, but when that company ran into financial problems, its assets were sold and in 1881 the Delhi and Hudson River Railroad was formed. The new company had Thomas Cornell as President, and Thomas C. Platt, William C. Sheldon, John S. Martin, Daniel B. Halstead, and other prominent capitalists as Directors. The line extended from the village of Delhi to a point on the Ulster and Delaware Railroad known as Arkville, a distance of about thirty miles, all in Delaware county, New York.
