The construction of the Evansville and Illinois Railroad was started in the summer of 1849 and was designed to run from Evansville, Vanderburgh County, through Princeton, Gibson County, IN, then to Mt. Carmel, IL, and eventually to Olney, IL. From the results of a March 1849 election $100,000 of the railroad's costs were to be paid by the county. The construction plans were changed and the railroad ended in Vincennes, Knox County, where it connected with another line that ran to Terre Haute, Vigo County, IN. The line was completed in December, 1853, although the advertised daily service ran at irregular intervals.

Chartered in 1853, the Evansville & Crawfordsville Railroad (E&C R.R.) was the first to service Evansville, Indiana. It helped the town be connected to the rest of the world and fostered its growth. The railroad was later renamed the Evansville & Terre Haute R.R. in 1877. It went on to be consolidated with other railroads of the region into the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad.
