Product Description

Fairmount Park Transportation Company certificate 1899 (Philadelphia PA)

Philly trolley car line. Very nice center nameplate in elaborate font. Issued and cancelled. Dated 1899. Measures approximately 10.5 x 7.5 inches.

The Fairmount Park Transportation Company was a private railway firm in Philadelphia that built and operated a scenic electric trolley system, featuring the Strawberry Mansion Bridge and serving Woodside Park.

Incorporated 1894 in New Jersey, the company opened its 8-mile electric open-trolley system on June 13, 1897. It was designed to blend with nature, tracks had grass planted between rails and ran through tunnels to avoid disturbing park visitors.

The company built the Woodside Amusement Park in 1897 to increase weekend passenger traffic.

Ownership transferred to the City of Philadelphia in 1939 due to mounting financial maintenance costs.

Continued operating at a loss post-World War II with aging equipment.

Permanently ceased all trolley operations and was dismantled in 1946.
