G. D. Searle and Co $5000 bond certificate 1976 (Delaware)

Uncommon modern stock-sized bond. Nice vignette of classical female figure reclined in front of a globe. Issued and cancelled.  Dated 1976. Approximately 12 x 8 inches. 

G.D. Searle was an American pharmaceutical company founded by Gideon Daniel Searle in 1888, famous for developing the first oral birth control pill and the artificial sweetener aspartame (NutraSweet). The company was acquired by Monsanto in 1985 and its operations were later absorbed by other companies, including Pfizer, which ultimately closed the final remaining facility in 2003.

Foundation: 
The company was founded in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1888 by Gideon Daniel Searle, a druggist who wanted to manufacture pharmaceuticals. It later moved its headquarters to Skokie, Illinois. 

Innovations: 
Searle is known for several key products:

• Enovid: One of the first oral contraceptives approved by the FDA in 1960. 
• NutraSweet: Developed the artificial sweetener aspartame, which became widely used in diet products. 
• Other drugs: Developed other well-known medications, such as the antidiarrheal Lomotil and the anti-inflammatory drug Celebrex. 

Acquisitions: 
The company was acquired by Monsanto in 1985. Monsanto later merged with Pharmacia in 2000, and Pfizer acquired Pharmacia in 2003, which led to the closure of the last Searle operations and the retirement of the name.
