The Hudson and Manhattan Railroad (H&M), also known as the "Hudson Tubes," was the original underground rail system connecting New Jersey's major rail terminals with Manhattan, operating from 1908 until bankruptcy in the 1950s. It was later taken over by the Port Authority, rebranded as PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson), and evolved into the modern PATH system that links New Jersey to Lower and Midtown Manhattan, with its World Trade Center station replacing the original H&M terminal.
Completed 1908, the Hudson and Manhattan tunnel was the first large transportation tunnel constructed under a major river in the United States. A bridge connecting Manhattan and New Jersey was considered a more tenuous possibility because the Hudson River's bottom was known to consist solely of deep mud in some places.
Operations:
The first service began in 1908, connecting Hoboken with New York City, with extensions to Newark and Lower Manhattan by 1909.
Decline & Takeover:
Ridership dropped with the rise of tunnels (Holland, Lincoln) and bridges; the company went bankrupt in 1954, leading the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to assume control in 1962.
Legacy:
The H&M was renamed PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) and continues to serve the region, with its Downtown terminus at the World Trade Center built on the site of the original H&M terminal.
