Mining and fertilizer. Very nice vignette of two classical figures (representing arts and science) flanking a framed mining scene with miners underground. Issued and punch cancelled to the right. Dated 1971 on the cert. Approximately 12 x 8 inches.
International Minerals and Chemical Corporation (IMC) was a mining and production company that evolved into the crop nutrition company, The Mosaic Company. Founded in 1909 as International Agricultural Corporation, it later became IMC Global and merged with Cargill's crop nutrition division in 2004 to form The Mosaic Company. The company's history includes a focus on phosphate and potash fertilizers and later expanded to include specialty chemicals and animal health products.
Founding and early history:
The company was founded as International Agricultural Corporation in 1909 to acquire mines, with its early focus on phosphate and potash.
Name changes and growth:
The name was changed to International Mineral & Chemical Corporation in 1941, and it grew into a major fertilizer producer. By the 1960s, it was a large company with significant annual sales.
Diversification:
Over time, the company diversified its portfolio to include specialty chemicals and animal health products through acquisitions, such as the 1975 merger with Commercial Solvents Corporation.
Later years and merger:
The company was known as IMC Global in its later years, operating as a major fertilizer producer before merging with Cargill, Inc.'s crop nutrition division in 2004.
Successor:
The merger created The Mosaic Company, a global crop nutrition company.
