Product Description

Nice OH and WV RR piece. Great multiple vignette bond - vignette of a Native American Indian at the top left and steam trains at the bottom. Vertical format. Issued and cancelled. Some coupons attached. Dated 1890 from the text. Folds from storage. Measuring approximately 13 x 8.5 inches.

The Kanawha & Michigan was a corporation of the States of Ohio and West Virginia, having its principal office at Columbus, Ohio. It was controlled through ownership of most of the outstanding capital stock by The Toledo and Ohio Central Railway Company, which latter company was controlled by The New York Central Railroad Company

In 1890, it was chartered in April in both OH and WV. In 1892, the rail-line between Point Pleasant and Charleston was completed. One year later (1893) it was extended to Gauley Bridge in Fayette County. A bridge was completed in the same year over the New River by the C&O, which connected the K&M to the C&O Railroad. Later, the line was bought by the New York Central Railroad.

The K&M Railroad was commonly referred to as the "Bridge Line to the Lakes". In 1893, the line was extended to Gauley Bridge in Fayette County from Charleston.

In 1910, the C&O bought control of the K&M. They planned to use it to lease the line to the New York Central System. This line later became part of the NYC. This line is commonly referred to as the West Virginia Secondary, given while under Conrail control. This line was originally the Kanawha and Ohio Railroad, but was re-organized as the Kanawha and Michigan Railway in 1893.

The K&M was controlled by the Toledo and Ohio Central Railway Company between 1903 and 1910. The K&M was merged with the Toledo & Ohio Central in 1938, and then it was merged with the NYC in 1952.
