Product Description

Lake Placid Hotel stock certificate c1895 (New York)

Plain certificate representing the history of Lake Placid NY. Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1895 from company records. Measures approximately 9.5 by 5.5 inches.

The Lake Placid Hotel Company was incorporated in 1895. Associated with Dr. Melvil Dewey, originator of the Dewey Decimal System, who founded the social and recreational Lake Placid Club in 1895.

Lake Placid is a village near the lake of the same name, in New York State’s Adirondack Mountains. It is known as a Winter Olympics venue and a hub for snow sports and other outdoor pursuits. In the center of town, Mirror Lake has a trail around the shoreline. The Lake Placid Olympic Museum exhibits artifacts including team uniforms and medals. The Historical Society Depot Museum is in the old train station.

Initial settlement focused on iron mining, but the area gained prominence as a summer resort after the 1840s. As leisure time increased in the late 19th century, Lake Placid was discovered as a resort by the wealthy, drawn to the fashionable Lake Placid Club. Melvil Dewey, who invented the Dewey Decimal System, designed what was then called "Placid Park Club" in 1895. This inspired the village to change its name to Lake Placid, an incorporated village in 1900. Dewey kept the club open through the winter in 1905, which aided the development of winter sports in the area.

Lake Placid has grown into a strong four-season destination resort, world famous for hosting the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Winter Games. Surrounded by the dramatic natural beauty associated with the mountain areas of Europe, Lake Placid now stands on its own in attracting National and International sporting events and competitions.
