Great water utility piece with a vignette showing the Pennsylvania state seal. Unissued and not cancelled.  Circa 1932 from early issued examples. Dated 19__. Approximately 11 x 7.5 inches. 

Lancaster Suburban Water Company was incorporated 1932 as part of the Depression work program to provide water to houses in Lancaster PA city. Company rolled into the City of Lancaster Water Department in the late 1940s.

Lancaster, PA's water history began with individual wells and springs, leading to the city building its first waterworks in 1836 using the Conestoga River. The Conestoga River was the sole source until the 1950s, when the Susquehanna River became an additional, primary source for the modern system, which now draws about 60% from the Susquehanna and 40% from the Conestoga. Early infrastructure, like wooden pipes, was replaced, and the city's water system grew to include reservoirs and water towers before shifting to its current, larger-scale sources.

Lancaster, PA, was founded in 1709 as "Hickory Town" by German immigrants and officially named after Lancaster, England by John Wright in 1729. It was the temporary capital of the United States from September 27, 1777, during the Revolutionary War and served as the capital of Pennsylvania from 1799 to 1812. Today, it is known as the "Red Rose City" and is famous for its rich Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and role in the Underground Railroad.
