McGraw Hill, Inc. is an American educational publisher and digital learning technology company. Known historically as one of the "Big Three" educational publishers alongside Pearson and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the company provides core curricula, digital learning platforms, and instructional software across the PreK-12, Higher Education, Global Professional, and international sectors.
The company was originally founded in 1888 when James H. McGraw bought the American Journal of Railway Appliances. In 1917, his publishing operations formally merged with those of John A. Hill to create the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company.
For generations, the brand expanded into a multi-industry massive enterprise that owned Standard & Poor's (S&P), J.D. Power, and several television networks. However, a corporate split occurred in 2013 when its education division was carved out and sold to Apollo Global Management for $2.4 billion.
Platinum Equity later bought the business in 2021 for $4.5 billion. After pivoting heavily toward EdTech, the business returned to the public markets via the New York Stock Exchange in 2025. Today, McGraw Hill continues a rapid expansion into generative AI, acquiring platforms like TeachFX to build scalable AI coaching tools for classrooms.
