Nice CT streetcar piece. Great electric trolley car vignette. Unissued and not cancelled. Dated 189_ but circa 1895 from state and successor records. Measures approximately 10.5 x 7 inches.
The Middletown Horse Railroad was incorporated 1885. The company was officially reorganized or renamed as the Middletown Street Railway Company in 1895, operating electrically powered trolley cars.
Electrification:
The system was electrified in 1894 and officially became the Middletown Street Railway Company.
Routes:
Lines connected Main Street, South Farms, the Connecticut Hospital for the Insane, and local recreation spots like Lakeview Park.
Expansion:
It absorbed the Portland Street Railway in 1898 to cross the river.
Later Successors:
The line was later absorbed or operated by larger transit conglomerates, passing to the Consolidated Railway Company in 1904 and subsequently the Connecticut Company in 1907, which ran local streetcars in the area until 1929.
