The New York Connecting Railroad was incorporated on April 21, 1892, and was jointly owned by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR). The Queens NY line opened in 1917 as a connection between the New Haven's Harlem River and Port Chester Railroad and the PRR East River Tunnels to Penn Station and the North River Tunnels under the Hudson River. The New York Connecting Railroad was electrified around 1917 and last extension completed in 1927 as an extension of the New Haven's system.
The line's defining engineering feature is the Hell Gate Bridge over the East River, a steel arch span completed in 1917 under chief engineer Gustav Lindenthal, which at 1,017 feet formed the world's longest arch-type bridge of its era and enabled heavy freight loads over the East River straits.
Originally operated by the New Haven Railroad for both freight and passenger services, it transitioned post-1968 mergers into Conrail and then the current CSX-NS shared arrangement, emphasizing through-train efficiency amid declining regional passenger use.
