The New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad was a corporation of the State of Pennsylvania, having its principal office at Bradford, Pa. It was incorporated originally as the Wilcox and Howard Hill Improvement Company, which was later changed to the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad Company.
The New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad was controlled indirectly by the Erie, by virtue of its control of the Northwestern Mining and Exchange Company, the company that owns most of the outstanding capital stock of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad.
The property of the company was operated by its own organization from the date the first section of its road was placed in operation, 1882, until July 1, 1890. From that date until November 30, 1895, the property was operated by The New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad Company and its receivers, and from the latter date to December 31, 1917, it was operated by the Erie. The property of the New York, Lake Erie and Western Coal and Railroad was taken over for operation by the United States Railroad Administration on January 1, 1918, as a part of the system of the Erie.
