New York & Philadelphia Traction Company stock certificate c1894 (New Jersey)

Uncommon interstate street railway. Fantastic vignette of a streetcar trolley with conductor and passengers. Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1894 from company records. Measures approximately 11 x 8 inches.   

The was an early electric streetcar and interurban trolley business incorporated in 1894. Founded by prominent transit magnates Peter A.B. Widener and William L. Elkins, it was part of a larger movement to build a continuous trolley network connecting New York and Philadelphia. It planned to connect street railway systems from Paterson and northern New Jersey down through Bound Brook, Somerville, and central transit corridors toward a unified inter-city route.

1894:
The company was founded to develop streetcar lines in New Jersey.

1897–1899:
The enterprise underwent rapid construction to connect regional towns.

1900:
The company officially consolidated with the Brunswick Traction Company and the New Brunswick City Railway to form the Middlesex & Somerset Traction Company.

Later Legacy:
This network spanned over 16 miles. It linked South Amboy, New Brunswick, Bound Brook, Somerville, and Raritan. The line was eventually absorbed by the Public Service Corporation of New Jersey in 1904.
