Ohio & Mississippi Railway stock certificate 1883 (Ohio - Illinois)

The Ohio and Mississippi Railway (earlier the Ohio and Mississippi Rail Road), abbreviated O&M, was a railroad operating between Cincinnati, Ohio, and East St. Louis, Illinois, from 1857 to 1893. The insolvent Ohio and Mississippi Railroad was reorganized in 1867 as the Ohio and Mississippi Railway. Notable for the first U.S. train robbery by the Reno Gang, eventually merging into the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern Railway in 1893 and becoming part of CSX Transportation.

Route:
Ran from Cincinnati, Ohio, to East St. Louis, Illinois, paralleling the Cincinnati and Whitewater Canal.

Construction:
Chartered in Indiana in 1848, it was built in Eastern (Cincinnati to Vincennes) and Western (Vincennes to St. Louis) divisions, finishing in 1857.

Significance:
It was the only broad-gauge railroad in Indiana, linking major eastern cities to the Mississippi River.

Historical Events:
A sabotage incident during the Civil War caused a troop train wreck near Huron, Indiana. The Reno Gang's infamous train robbery in 1866 occurred on the O&M near Seymour, Indiana, marking the first U.S. train robbery.

Legacy:
The line became part of the Baltimore & Ohio Southwestern Railway in 1893 and its route now forms part of CSX Transportation's Indiana and Illinois Subdivisions.
