Product Description

Pennsylvania Railroad Company $1000 gold bond certificate 1918 (Pennsylvania)

Famous PRR bond. Great vignette of the original Pennsylvania Station in New York City. Vertical format. Nice company name underprint in orange. Issued and cancelled. Dated 1918 from the text.  Folds from storage. Measuring approximately 14 x 10 inches.

The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), once the largest railroad and transportation enterprise in the world, was a cornerstone of American industrialism for over 120 years.

Establishment (1846):
The PRR was chartered by the Pennsylvania State Legislature to build a rail line from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh, primarily to compete with the Erie Canal in New York.

"Standard Railroad of the World":
By 1882, the PRR was the largest corporation in the world, renowned for its technological innovations, such as being the first U.S. railroad to use steel rails and adopting standard time zones.

Engineering Marvels:
The PRR is famous for constructing the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona to overcome the Allegheny Mountains and the original Pennsylvania Station in New York City.

Innovation:
It was a pioneer in steel rail use (1865), air brakes (1872), and large-scale electrification of its eastern lines between 1915 and 1938.

Merger and Decline:
Facing competition from highways and air travel, the PRR merged with its rival, the New York Central, in 1968 to form Penn Central, which declared bankruptcy just two years later.

Succession:
After Penn Central’s landmark bankruptcy in 1970, its assets were primarily absorbed by Conrail in 1976. Today, most former PRR tracks are operated by Norfolk Southern, while the electrified Northeast Corridor is owned by Amtrak.
