The Pennsylvania Tunnel and Terminal Railroad was incorporated under the general laws of the States of New Jersey and New York through filing on June 26, 1907. The Pennsylvania Tunnel and Terminal Railroad (PT&T) was a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad that owned and operated the New York Tunnel Extension, a crucial rail line that carried Pennsylvania Railroad trains under the Hudson and East Rivers into New York City's Pennsylvania Station and to Long Island City. Established by consolidating earlier subsidiaries in 1907, the PT&T's infrastructure was a significant engineering feat, featuring the first tunnels to be built for standard railroad trains under the North (Hudson) and East Rivers.
The Pennsylvania Tunnel and Terminal Railroad Company owned the Pennsylvania passenger-station building and facilities at New York City, together with a standard-gauge, electrically-operated, terminal railroad leading to that station, located in and near New York City in the States of New Jersey and New York. The main line extended from Manhattan Transfer, N.J., easterly through tunnels under the Hudson River, Manhattan Island, and East River, to Long Island City, N.Y.
Purpose:
To connect the Pennsylvania Railroad's main lines into Manhattan and provide passenger service to the new Pennsylvania Station.
Route:
The line extended from Manhattan Transfer, N.J., through tunnels under the Hudson River, Manhattan Island, and the East River, ultimately reaching Sunnyside Yard in Long Island City, N.Y.
Engineering Feat:
The project included groundbreaking engineering for the time, employing the shield method to construct the subaqueous tunnels under the rivers and a different method for the tunnels under Manhattan.
