Peoria and Pekin Terminal Railway Company was incorporated in Illinois in 1900 to consolidate earlier local railroad and rail construction companies, adding to its list of area railway franchises.
The Peoria Railway Terminal Company was incorporated November 17, 1906, in Illinois, to acquire the property, rights, and franchises of the Peoria and Pekin Terminal Railway Company. The principal office of the carrier is located at Peoria.
The railroad of Peoria Railway Terminal Company was a partly double-track, standard-gauge railroad, located between the cities of Peoria and Pekin, in the State of Illinois. The main line was equipped with overhead trolley, and both steam and electric motive power are used in the operation of the property. The owned main line connecting these two cities extending 9.8 miles. The company changed name to the Peoria Terminal Company through other area acquisitions. This company was later controlled by The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway
Most railways are regional and do not own track all the way across the nation, so their lines end at some point. Since the late 19th century, many railways have chosen to end their lines near Peoria, Illinois. When a train car reaches the end of one rail line, it must be switched to a different line to continue to its destination.
