Pilsen Lumber Company stock certificate c1888 (Chicago Illinois) 

Great Chicago history! Plain certificate circa 1888 from the Czech neighborhood of Pilsen (near University Park). Unissued and not cancelled. Dated 18__ but circa 1888 from company records. Measuring approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. 

Incorporated 1888 by Joseph Miksak, president, Pilsen lumber operated in the 1890’s as a lumber yard with mill and 7 acres but later bought shipping barges for the transport of lumber to be used on Chicago’s Ship Canal.

Located on the corner of 22nd St. and Laflin, it served the local neighborhood in a period of home building. Damaged in a fire in 1899 but operated into the 1930s. Joseph Miksak, president, and Edgar Foss, Bay City lumber baron, were killed in 1915 when his car was struck by a train.

Pilsen is a historic Chicago neighborhood (now rich in Latino culture) originally settled by Czech immigrants who named it after Plzeň, Czech Republic.
