Nice perched eagle vignette at the top of this cert. Issued and cancelled - punch holes at bottom. Dated 1951. Certificate 4 (looks like #1) made out to United Transit Company. Measures approximately 12 x 9.5 inches.
As a subsidiary of the Virginia Railway and Power Company owned the franchise for the city street car and trolleybus service in 1923. The Portsmouth Transit eventually became an owned subsidiary of the United Transit Company.
The Virginia Transit Company took the transit operations in Norfolk Dec 29, 1944. On July 1, 1945, the Virginia Transit Company, operators of the Richmond and Norfolk systems, pooled its routes with the Portsmouth Transit Company, Youngstown (Ohio) Municipal Railway Company, the Akron (Ohio) Transportation Company, the Springfield (Illinois) Transportation Company, the Southern Coach Company, curators of the Chattanooga and Nashville, Tennessee, systems, and the Baton Rouge (Louisiana) Transportation Company to organize the United Transit Company.
The Virginia Railway and Power Company was a company incorporated in 1909 that provided electric power, gas, and streetcar service in Norfolk and Richmond, Virginia. Founded by Jay Gould and later acquired, it was renamed the Virginia Electric and Power Company (VEPCO) in 1925 and eventually became part of today's Dominion Energy.
