Older CT RR company. Awesome vignette of an artist's interpretation of the CT state seal with a steam train and passenger cars running in the background. Unissued and not cancelled. Dated 18__ but circa 1863 from company records. Measuring approximately 10 x 7 inches.
Incorporated in Connecticut in 1857 as Rockville Branch Railroad. Organized in 1862 and name changed in 1863 to The Rockville Railroad Company. Connected Rockville, a village in Vernon CT, to the Hartford, Providence & Fishkill Railroad. Deeded in 1905 to The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company and merged in 1907.
Phineas Talcott (1793-1863) became president of Rockville's American Mill, served as our state representative and state senator, was president of the Rockville Railroad Company and the Savings Bank of Rockville. He was also a Probate Judge and donated Talcott Park to the city. George Maxwell succeeded him as president of the Rockville Railroad. Mr. Maxwell (1817-1891) was active as a business and civic leader, serving as vice-president of the Rockville National Bank, president of the Rockville Gas Light Company, treasurer of the Rockville Water Power Company and president of the Rockville Aqueduct Company.
