Savings Bank of Griffin stock certificate c1890 (Georgia) 

Georgia bank history! Nice vignette of a farm scene and old train behind a blacksmith and woman who are on both sides of a family in their living room in front of a fire place. Around the border of the vignette it says "Prosperity is as sure to follow systematic savings, as day is to follow night". Unissued and not cancelled with stub attached. Circa 1890 (dated 189_). Measures approximately 10.5 x 6.5 inches, without stub. Border almost to the edge. 

The Savings Bank of Griffin was a historic financial institution in Griffin, Georgia, established 1890 (chartered 1889) for the economic growth to support regional trade and later appearing in state banking records through the 1920s.

History and Background

• Chartered in 1889. Founded in the 1890 in Griffin, Georgia, to help fund local growth and trade.
• Published official statements of condition as late as April 1926 under the state superintendent of banks.
• Connected to the hometown history of Griffin, which is also known as the birthplace of John Henry "Doc" Holliday.

The City of Griffin was founded 1843 by Lewis Lawrence Griffin, President of the Monroe Railroad and Banking Company. The city played an important role during the Civil War, offering medical services and a hospital. There are many soldiers from both sides of the Civil War buried in Stonewall Confederate Cemetery, operated and maintained by the City of Griffin. Griffin is approximately 40 miles south of Atlanta and 55 miles north of Macon.

One of Griffin’s most famous residents, John Henry "Doc" Holliday, was born August 14, 1851 and baptized march 21, 1852 in the Presbyterian Church in Griffin. After receiving a degree from Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery, he moved back to Georgia and had a successful practice in Downtown Griffin before ill-health forced his move out west. He died November 8, 1887 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
