York ME hotel. Plain certificate with a great coastal Maine hotel history. Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1916 from company records. Measures approximately 11 x 8 inches.

The Emerson Hotel in York Harbor, Maine, started as a grand Gilded Age summer hotel around the late 1800s/early 1900s, a landmark for wealthy visitors, later becoming part of the larger York Harbor Inn complex, offering historic charm and lodging in a classic New England setting near the harbor, reflecting York's history as a prosperous seaport and resort destination.

The Emerson Inc was incorporated 1916 for rebuilding of the Marshall House (hotel estab, 1871) due to fire loss. A fire destroyed the building on January 26, 1916. The building burned flat, though only the caretaker was inside at the time of the fire, as the hotel was preparing for the summer season. The hotel was originally a four-story wooden resort but was replaced with a red brick building in 1918.

Early Days (Late 1800s - Early 1900s):
York Harbor became a fashionable resort, and the Emerson was one of its signature hotels, a "grand shingled summer hotel" typical of the era.

Gilded Age Charm:
Like other grand hotels of its time, it featured beautiful architecture, likely shingled, with lush grounds, attracting affluent summer guests.

Evolution:
The original structure or its legacy became part of the larger York Harbor Inn, a historic property that has evolved but maintained its classic New England coastal feel.
