York River Bridge Corporation stock certificate 1932 (Virginia)
Product Description
York River Bridge Corporation stock certificate 1932 (Virginia)
Rare VA bridge cert. Tremendous vignette of two classical figures (representing industry and agriculture) flanking a standing winged Lady Liberty raising a torch. Unissued and not cancelled. No company officer signatures but issued to and dates filled out. Dated 1932 on the cert. Approximately 10.5 x 8 inches.
In Oct 1932, the Commission granted a permit to the York River Bridge Corporation of Newport News Virginia to apply for a permit and build a bridge. It appears the deal fell apart in 1933. Another attempt was made by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) to get a toll bridge going in 1939 but was also scuttled.
On May 7, 1952, US 17 was placed on a newly constructed bypass of Yorktown and Gloucester Point that included a new bridge over the York River (Coleman Bridge). This left behind SR 704 and a little VA 238 in York County and SR 1208 in Gloucester County.
Today’s George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, opened May 7, 1952, is a double swing bridge that spans the York River between Yorktown and Gloucester Point, in the United States state of Virginia. It connects the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula regions of Tidewater, Virginia.
