American Mining and Engineering Company stock certificate 1901 (Boston MA)

Rare mining collectible. Plain certificate but with an unusual eagle under printed vignette at the bottom. Underprint in green. Vertical folds from mailing. Issued and not cancelled. Dated 1901. Measures approximately 10.5 x 8.5 inches.

The American Mining and Engineering Company was an early 20th-century enterprise incorporated in New Jersey in 1899. Their primary operations consisted of a lease on a 40-acre tract in the Tuckahoe Mining District in Joplin, Missouri, with main corporate offices based in Boston, Massachusetts. Signed by Thomas S. Wentworth as president and George F. Bradstreet as treasurer.

Bradstreet, George Flint
Born Bradford, Mass., April 3, 1854; son of Justin Edward and Almira (Ellis) Bradstreet; educated in the common and high schools and took one year course in evening business school; married, Bradford, Mass., Dec. 23, 1874, Julia Gertrude Kimball. Began business life at the age of 14 in packing house with father; went to New York, 1885, as manager of branch houses of G. H. Hammond & Co.

Organized the Wheeler-Bradstreet Co.; removed to Boston, 1895, and became general eastern superintendent Armour & Co.; on account of ill-health was obliged to resign, 1898; organized the George F. Bradstreet Co., stocks and bonds, 1899, of which he was president; also president, general manager and director New Era Machinery Co. ; treasurer, secretary and director New England Gold and Copper Mining Co.; director in several other companies.

Wentworth, Thomas S.
Born in Acton, Me., in 1846. In the Civil War, he responded to the call for volunteers, and served in the army from 1862 to 1865. He was a member of the 13th New Hampshire Regiment, was wounded May 16, 1864, at the battle of Drury's Bluff, and again September 28 at Chapin's Farm. He served in the 9th, 18th, and 24th Army Corps, was before Petersburg in the summer of 1864, and participated in all the battles of the regiment except when wounded. At the fall of Richmond, on the morning of April 3, 1865, he entered the city, as a member of Gen. Charles Devens's division of the 24th Army Corps.

In 1878, the firm of Downs & Wentworth was established. Mr. Wentworth served Boston for two years in the Common Council, but declined an election to the Board of Aldermen. From 1894 until 1896, he was a member of the School Committee. Mr. Wentworth had always taken interest in the Boston Fruit and Produce Exchange, an organization of upwards of five hundred members, served two year as a director, and in 1896 was elected president of the association.
