Product Description
Boston and Maine Corporation stock certificate 1965 (Massachusetts)
Railroad holding company. Nice vignette of two seated classical male figures flanking the corporate logo. Issued and cancelled. Dated 1965. Measures approximately 12 x 8 inches.
The Boston and Maine Corporation (B&M) was a historic U.S. Class I railroad, a major force in New England transportation, chartered in 1835, connecting Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York with freight and passenger services before facing financial troubles and becoming part of Pan Am Railways in 1983, with its network later absorbed by CSX in 2022.
Origins:
Evolved from early lines like the Andover & Wilmington Railroad, formally incorporated as the B&M in 1835, becoming the largest railroad in New England.
Operations:
Served central/northern Massachusetts, southern Maine, New Hampshire, and parts of Vermont and New York, handling significant freight and passenger traffic.
Decline & Transition:
Struggled with shifting travel trends, leading to bankruptcy in 1916 and reorganization, eventually becoming part of Guilford Transportation Industries (Pan Am Railways) in 1983.
Modern Era:
Pan Am Railways, which included the B&M, was acquired by CSX in 2022, expanding CSX's reach in the Northeast.
