The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team based in Boston. Founded in 1946 as a charter member of the Basketball Association of America, the Celtics then moved into the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1949.

Currently playing in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, the Celtics have the most NBA titles with 18 championships. Eleven of those occurred between 1957 and 1969, with a dynasty led by center Bill Russell and coach Red Auerbach. The Celtics won two more titles in the 1970s and three more in the 1980s under the leadership of forward Larry Bird. After a 22-year drought, the Celtics got a title in 2008, and then another in 2024.

The Boston Celtics are the most successful franchise in NBA history, holding a record 18 championships. Founded in 1946, the team is defined by several legendary eras, including a mid-century dynasty that remains the most dominant in North American professional sports.
