Chester Street Railway stock certificate 1900s (Pennsylvania)

Perfect vignette of a period streetcar. Unissued and not cancelled. Dated 19__ , circa 1904 from issued examples. Measures approximately 12 x 7.75 inches.   

The Chester Street Railway Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania on July 13, 1882. It operated horsecars 1883 – 1893. Horse cars were replaced with electric streetcars operated by new company. In 1891, the line was leased to the Union Railway Company of Chester, which in turn, was leased by the Southern Pennsylvania Traction Company in 1910. The company operated just over 7.5 miles of track and was eventually controlled by the Wilmington and Philadelphia Traction Company.

Chester Traction Company operated the following companies: Chester Street Railway Company, Union Street Railway Company, Chester & Delaware Railway, Philadelphia & Chester Railway Company, Prospect Park Street Railway Company, Media & Chester Electric Railway Company, and Southwestern Street Railway Company.

The Delaware Coach Company was originally incorporated as the Wilmington & Philadelphia Traction Company on June 25, 1910, and operated an electric street railway line from Wilmington, Delaware, to Chester, Pennsylvania, and to Philadelphia. Throughout the early twentieth century, the company purchased stock in and leased numerous electric railway, transportation, and utilities companies in the Wilmington and Chester areas. In 1941, it changed its name to the Delaware Coach Company as trackless trolleys and buses replaced electric streetcars.
