The Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad (CO&G), or "Choctaw Route," was a significant late 19th/early 20th-century railroad connecting Memphis, Arkansas, through Little Rock, to Oklahoma and eventually Texas, known for its role in developing the region and linking with the "Rock Island Railroad" which eventually absorbed it in 1904. Famous for its passenger service, including the "Choctaw Rocket," the CO&G's lines became core Rock Island routes, with remnants now operated by other carriers like "Union Pacific Railroad".
Origins:
Started as the Choctaw Coal and Railway Company, incorporated by Congress, and became the CO&G in 1894, with initial lines built in Oklahoma by the late 1890s.
Expansion:
Acquired the Memphis & Little Rock Railroad, connecting Memphis to Little Rock, and extended lines west into Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle, reaching Amarillo by 1902.
Rock Island Acquisition:
Came under the control of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (Rock Island) in 1902 and was formally merged in 1948.
