Elmira State Line Railroad Company stock certificate c1872 (New York)

Classic period steam train at the top of this rare cert. Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1872 from company records. Measures approximately 10 x 7.5 inches.   

The Elmira State Line Railroad was a short, 6.5-mile rail line incorporated in 1872 to connect the rail networks of southern New York and northern Pennsylvania. It primarily served as a vital link for transporting coal from Pennsylvania mines to markets in New York and the Great Lakes.

Purpose:
Built in the interest of the Erie Railway to link the Tioga Railroad (near Lawrenceville, PA) to a point near Elmira, NY.

Route:
The line ran from State Line Junction (south of Elmira) to the New York-Pennsylvania border, where it connected with the Tioga Railroad to reach Blossburg, PA.

Ownership:
Though originally independent, it was operated by various companies, eventually falling under the control of the Erie Railroad in 1917.

Abandonment:
The track was officially abandoned in August 1942, after which the rails and bridges were scrapped.
