Grocers' Packing Company It was a subsidiary name, or a fictitious brand, created in 1878 by the Boston-based canning firm Henry Mayo & Co. for its products. It later moved its headquarters to Portland Maine in 1884 where it changed incorporation (from Massachusetts). Believed to be dissolved in 1901 per state records.
The first producer of baked beans was the Boston firm of Henry Mayo & Co., under a fictitiously named subsidiary named Grocers’ Packing Company in Boston. Canning operations began in May of 1878 and was producing as many as 8,000 cans of baked beans and codfish balls daily by December of that same year, for its European and South American customers.
In the summer of 1878 the Mayo Company sent its products to the Paris World’s Fair, where they received a silver metal for the best baked beans in the world. This resulted in a contract from the French government to provision its navy. Unfortunately, after the company ramped up production to fulfill the contract, it was canceled by the French government, leaving Henry Mayo & Co. awash in cans of baked beans. To sell this excessive inventory, they began an aggressive national advertising campaign. The company expanded its name to by incorporating in Maine in 1884 and dissolving previous corporate entities in Boston, MA.
