Harrisburg Bridge Company stock certificate c1928 - Market Street bridge

Tough to find Harrisburg piece! Perfect vignette of the Market Street Bridge crossing the Susquehanna River into Harrisburg (artist's rendition). Unissued and not cancelled.  Dated 19__ but circa 1928 from corporate records. Measures approximately 8.5 x 5.5 inches.

The Harrisburg Bridge Company was incorporated July 6, 1812 to build the first Market Street Bridge in Harrisburg, Theodore Burr’s Camelback covered bridge built between 1813-1817. The Harrisburg Bridge company continued as a viable business, building the Market Street steel replacement bridge, completed in 1906 and the concrete and stone arch bridge completed in 1928.

Market Street Bridge (1928):
The river crossing where the bridge now stands had historically been the western gateway into Harrisburg. For over a century, spans here were operated by the Harrisburg Bridge Company, including the first bridge, the famous Camel Back covered bridge designed by Theodore Burr.

Because the bridge was a toll crossing, the construction sequence was designed to interrupt traffic as little as possible and therefore maintain toll revenues. The present bridge, designed by engineers Modjeski and Masters and architect Paul Philippe Cret, serves as a monumental entrance to Pennsylvania's capital city.

The Market Street Bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
