The Iaeger and Southern Railway was a short-lived, early coal-hauling line in West Virginia (1898-1906) that built into the Dry Fork region, notable for its short operational life and later absorption by the massive Norfolk & Western (N&W) Railway.
Origins:
Started operations 1898, focusing on accessing coal fields in McDowell County, West Virginia.
Acquisition:
Merged with the Norfolk & Western Railway (N&W) in 1906, which integrated its lines.
Iaeger's Importance:
The town of Iaeger became a vital junction for coal trains, a role continuing under the modern Norfolk Southern Railway (NS), which formed from the N&W and Southern Railway merger (1982).
Legacy:
The Iaeger & Southern's infrastructure, especially the Dry Fork Branch, became part of the N&W/NS network, highlighting early 20th-century coal development.
