Kennebec & Portland Railroad Company stock certificate c1854 (Maine)

Uncommon early Maine railroad! Unusual top small vignette of a very early steam train and passenger car. The left side border has an early locomotive top and bottom. Unissued and not cancelled. Dated 1854 in the text "Preferred Stock of 1854".  Measures approximately 10.5 x 8.5 inches with stub.

The Kennebec and Portland Railroad (K&P) was a pioneering 19th-century railroad company in Maine, chartered on April 1, 1836, to build a line connecting Portland on Casco Bay with the industrial and agricultural centers along the Kennebec River, primarily Augusta.

Construction commenced in 1849 after financial and organizational delays, with the mainline from Portland through Yarmouth, Brunswick, and other towns reaching Augusta by 1852, marked by the arrival of the first train on December 15, 1851.

This route was part of what became known as the Lower Road and facilitated vital passenger and freight transport, including lumber, potatoes, and manufactured goods, boosting regional commerce. In 1864, the K&P reorganized as the Portland and Kennebec Railroad due to financial challenges, but it continued operations until its consolidation in 1870 into the newly formed Maine Central Railroad system, alongside the Somerset & Kennebec Railroad, which extended the line northward to Waterville.

Under Maine Central ownership, the route peaked in the 1920s with up to 13 daily passenger trains between Portland and Waterville, supporting Maine's pulp and paper industry with eight mills along the Kennebec by the 1960s.

Passenger service ended in 1960 amid competition from automobiles and highways, while freight persisted until the 1980s; the segment from Brunswick to Augusta was acquired by the State of Maine in 1991 for potential preservation, though it now lies largely abandoned and blocked at several points.
