The Madera Bridge Company was a Pennsylvania company incorporated in 1861 to build a bridge over Clearfield Creek in the town of Madera. It was formed to construct a bridge to cross Clearfield Creek at the location of the public road running from Phillipsburg to Glenn Hope.
In the early years, Madera was called Alexander’s Fording. An early settler by the name of Charles Pusey lived in a settlement known as Puseyville on the eastern side of the Clearfield Creek. The Pusey family were landowners operating a sawmill and a gristmill and saw value to construct a bridge over Clearfield Creek to connect several small villages.
Charles Pusey applied for and received permission to open his own post office and was tasked with selecting a short name for his post office and chose the name Madera. Mr. Pusey's wife, Ruth Atkins, selected the name "Madera" as a tribute to a very close friend of her brother. Her brother was in the iron business at Pottsville, PA. On January 31, 1861, the Madera Post Office was officially established. Then Pusey organized the Madera Bridge Company and spent a lifetime making Madera a center of trade and manufacturing, long before soft coal was even discovered in the region
Madera is an unincorporated community in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, United States. The community is located along Pennsylvania Route 53, 4.4 miles west of Houtzdale.
